Ecological Impact & Circularity

Ida & Volta is committed to maximally minimize the environmental impact of its clothing.

Our garments are made of 100% natural and biodegradable, recycled or upcycled materials.
Wherever possible, we choose homebound products (like linen and  wool) and try to showcase local products. Our production takes place in the countries that we ourselves live in (Belgium and Portugal in our case) and is for large part doe by our own hands. When we do occasionally choose to source materials from outside Europe, we do so because this particular supplier scores very high on all our other principles. We always very carefully outweigh the pros and cons of each design decision and are open to addressing any question you might have about this.

No plastic in (y)our clothes, please

Whenever we have a  textile produced from scratch (so that means, not recycled or upcycled), it will always be “plastic free”. This implies it will never contain stretch-thread, polyester or nylon. Why no plastic? Because plastic is made from the non-renewable (and politically charged) raw material called petroleum. During the production process toxic chemicals are emitted, posing a health hazard for both humans, animals and environment. A huge reason why we are radical in eliminating any plastic from our garments is the fact that plastic is not biodegradable and so it is a permanent menace to man, animal and our planet. Moreover, each time you wash a garment containing plastic zippers, polyester, polyacril, nylon or any other form of plastic, micro-plastics from the textile are freed into the water. Up to today there is no way to filter these particles out.

Natural materials are an excellent alternative because they possess a  large range of qualities : they are beathable, they insulate, they are water repellent and they don’t cause allergic reactions.

We design with your garment’s recycling potential in mind.

The recycling process is facilitated when a product consists entirely of 1 raw material, so it does not have to be taken apart piece by piece before being recycled. This is why our garments always consist of 1 textile. It is also the reason why we made the rather drastic decision to use cotton yarn instead of the usual polyester. This might seem like a detail, but it certainly is not. Clothing manufacturing, as a rule, is done using polyester yarn because it is cheaper and stronger. However, polyester is not biodegradable and it makes the recycling process much more difficult, whereas cotton yarn is biodegradable. The same goes for our labels and washing labels.

A lot of thought also went into the “insides” of our garment: even though we do not see it, usually different types of materials (yes, plastic and glue) were used to have your garment keep its nice shape. Here, Ida&Volta opted for the oldschool technique of using natural canvasses that are not only biodegradable, but also keep your garment in shape for much longer.

All our Corozo buttons are biodegradable.
Our textiles have been dyed according to the latest European regulations. We are committed to looking into this process even more in the future and experiment with natural dyes ourselves. We use second hand materials wherever possible (patterning paper, sewing gear, prototype fabrics etc,…)

We only distribute within Europe (for know only in Belgium).
Our tags and packaging are all either recycled or recyclable.
